Books Bank Scheme
Goal:
- To provide reading materials in the form of books to students from poor and weaker sections of society.
- To assist students who cannot afford to purchase necessary study materials.
- To help these students achieve parity with their more privileged peers.
- To cultivate a habit of reading among students.
- To enhance students' reading skills.
- To enable students to improve their performance in examinations.
The Context:
Naba Ballygunge Mahavidyalaya College Library is committed to upholding the human values enshrined in the preamble of the Indian Constitution: liberty, equality, fraternity, and justice. The college's sole motto is national integration, imparting education to students regardless of caste, creed, sect, or religion. Situated in a cosmopolitan area, the institution serves the educational needs of people living in Kasba and its adjoining slum areas, particularly those from weaker sections of society. More than 85% of the students belong to educationally backward classes and poor families with no proper guidance at home.

The Practice:
In line with the institution's vision and mission, the college has formed the “Student Support and Progression Sub-Committee,” which organizes various programs, including the “Books Bank Scheme.” This scheme aims to help students from weaker sections by providing them with one book prescribed for their respective courses. The primary goal is to integrate poor students into the mainstream of education.
Evidence of Success:
Over the past five years, excluding the COVID period, many students have benefited from this scheme. Additionally, the college has succeeded in fostering social commitment, educational interest, and reading habits among students. Many students have achieved high percentages in University Examinations, with some also succeeding in competitive exams and other fields. Thus, this scheme significantly contributes to the development process of the college.
